Hi there,
This month's tip: turn it down while you sleep
The U.S. Department of Energy says turning your thermostat back 7 to 10°F for 8 hours a day can save up to about 10% a year on heating and cooling. The easiest 8 hours are the ones you spend asleep under a warm blanket. Set a reminder, or let a programmable thermostat do it.
More in Thermostat settings that save, or see what a space heater costs with the appliance energy cost calculator.
One line on your bill
Fixed charge: the amount you pay each month no matter how much energy you use. It's why your bill never drops to zero, even in a mild month.
Reader question
"Someone called saying my power will be cut off in an hour unless I pay with a gift card. Is that real?" No. Utilities don't demand gift cards. Hang up and call the number on your bill. See Utility scams.
Stay warm,
