Help paying your energy bills: programs compared
If an energy bill is hard to pay, you're not alone, and there's help. Here's a quick comparison of the main programs and where to ask. Asking early gives you the most options.
| Program | What it does | Where to ask |
|---|---|---|
| LIHEAP | Federal money, run by states, to help eligible households pay heating and cooling bills, and sometimes for crisis help or repairs. | Your state or local LIHEAP office. Search "LIHEAP" with your state, or dial 211. |
| Weatherization Assistance Program | Free energy-efficiency improvements for eligible households, like insulation and sealing air leaks. | Your state weatherization agency, through Energy.gov or 211. |
| Utility payment plan | Spreads a past-due balance over several months. | Call the customer service number on your bill. |
| Budget billing | Equal monthly payments based on your yearly use. Doesn't lower the total. | Ask your utility; often set up online or by phone. |
| Utility hardship or discount programs | Some utilities and charities offer bill credits or reduced rates for eligible customers. | Ask your utility what programs it offers. |
| Shutoff protections | Many states limit shutoffs in winter, extreme heat or for medical needs. Rules vary. | Your state utility commission or your utility. |
| 211 | A free, confidential line that connects you to local help with bills, food and housing. | Dial 211 or visit 211.org. |
