Thermostat settings that save

A few degrees, for the hours you're asleep or away.

5 min read

Heating and cooling are usually the biggest part of a home energy bill. The thermostat is the cheapest place to start.

The basics

  • The U.S. Department of Energy says turning your thermostat back 7 to 10°F for 8 hours a day can save up to about 10% a year on heating and cooling
  • Set it lower in winter and higher in summer while you sleep or are out
  • A programmable or smart thermostat can do it for you, but a reminder works too
  • Change the setting gradually if you have a heat pump; check its manual

Comfort tips

  • Layers and blankets in winter
  • Ceiling fans in summer, and only in rooms with people in them
  • Keep vents and radiators clear of furniture

Savings vary by home and climate. Check the manual for your heating system. Savings Lantern isn't paid by any utility, energy supplier, installer or product maker.
