Your utility won't demand gift cards.

4 min read

Scammers pretend to be utility workers and threaten to cut off your power unless you pay right away.

Red flags

  • Threats to shut off service within an hour
  • Demands for payment by gift card, prepaid card, payment app or cryptocurrency
  • Door-to-door "inspectors" who ask to come in without an appointment
  • Offers to "lower your rate" that ask for your account number

What to do

Hang up and call the number on your bill. Report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
