If an energy bill is hard to pay, there's help. Asking early gives you more options.
Where to look
- LIHEAP: the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, run by states, helps with heating and cooling bills
- The Weatherization Assistance Program can help eligible households make homes more energy efficient at no cost
- Your utility may offer payment plans, hardship funds or discount rates
- Dial 211 to find local help
Call before a shutoff
Contact your utility as soon as you know you'll have trouble paying. Many states have protections for winter, extreme heat or medical needs.
Programs and rules vary by state. See our help with energy bills page for a comparison. Savings Lantern isn't paid by any utility, energy supplier, installer or product maker.
